In the past week, we have put our aquaponic system together and we planted several plants. We got our fish through a koi farmer. There were several hundred fish and we split them somewhat evenly among the two classes. We planted pak choi and are hoping to plant more in the next week or so.

I will be keeping the blog updated, so come back soon to see the progress on our plants.

Here is our growing bed. We are growing pak choi and one other plant at the moment. In the next few days, we hope to plant some more.

A group of elementary school students came down to look at our aquaponic system. They will be harvesting our fish.

EVERYBODY SMILE FOR AQUAPONICS!!!

Mr. Kaneko is deep conversation with two of the students about the fish.

We got our fishes over the weekend. Mr. Kaneko got koi and the tilapia were not ready yet.

We also began planting our plants. We planted pak choi so far and we shall see what happens.

Setup day

Welcome everyone to the Mid Pacific Institute Aquaponics Period 1 blog.

We are the first aquaponics class at Mid Pacific Institute so we are very excited to be able to have this opportunity.

Check back here for any events or news that may occur over the semester. I will try to regularly update photos of the system as well.

GO PERIOD 1!!!!!

On September 9th, we started setting up our aquaponic system. We started washing the growing media (we are using red and black cinder) , we set up the plumbing, the pump, and placed it in its respective growing position for the duration of the semester.

For our growing media, we are using the red and black cinder because it is a fairly inert substance that is pourous so it will hold a lot of oxygen and it will not disintegrate at all. It is one of the cheapest growing medias as well.

We have not started the pond yet because we do not have the fish, but when we do, we will be using koi and tilapia.

Check back here soon for some more information about how our fabulous aquaponic system is going.
